Repair Service

Please call us at 510-549-2126 or email us at sales@thesoundwell.com
to make sure that we work on the particular component that you want repaired.

We are open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, Noon to 4 P.M.

We are closed Monday through Thursday - except by appointment.
As we've done for most of the last decade, we take live phone calls on most closed days from
10 - 11 A.M. (West Coast Time) - should you need to talk to us after retail hours.

We offer repair service on component grade stereo components made for non-commercial, home use. We'd like to have contact with you before you bring any item in for service. Please make sure you e-mail or call us before you bring in any service work. We want to make sure we fix the specific make and model of your set and to be able to quote you our rates.

Let us digress a little and tell you up front what we don't work on: consoles (furniture systems), car audio, professional audio (except for a few power amps), most mini systems, boom boxes, most portable equipment, DVD players, VCR's, DAT recorders, 8-tracks, CD burners, dubbing cassette decks and televisions.

There are also a few specific brands we don't work on. In many cases we like the gear, but the manufacturer offers ZERO support towards repair. They either won't sell parts/service information to us or they NO longer have parts and service available.

At this time we are also NOT accepting repair work shipped in from outside of our area. This may be something we offer in the future - but want to have our infrastructure in place and do it right, before we offer that service. If you need service work on things that we don't repair OR if you want a referral to someone that will accept your repair from afar, please ask.

What we do offer, is service for high quality, mid-price and higher-price component grade home audio equipment. Separate components such as amps, tuners, receivers, speakers, turntables, select cassette decks, open reel tape decks and CD players.

Our shop is staffed by three technical people that have a combined experience of over 80 years. Two of us go back to the early 70's! We also keep a good stock of repair parts and what many have said is the largest collection of audio service manuals in the world. We are jealous of our parts and manuals and limit their use to the repair of customer's items and refurbishing of equipment that we resell. As such, we do NOT sell repair parts over the counter or loan out or sell our repair manuals.

We also own state of the art test instruments that outfit 3+ service benches. Brands such as Sound Technology, Leader, Fluke, Nakamichi, and HP reside on all our test benches - to insure testing of repairs to spec. Fortunately this equipment hasn't changed much over the last two decades and we haven't had to replace it as you would in many electronics businesses!

We also listen to all sets once fixed. Good test equipment is essential, but you must do the final listening test with your ears.

We quote TWO WEEK turnaround time on all repairs and try to deliver in one week. The most common things that hold up repairs and make them take longer are:

1) Quirky problems that need watching, especially ones that are intermittent.

2) Sets that need parts ordered from the manufacturer.

We stock all the common electronic parts that will fix most sets in a timely manner.
When we are at the mercy of a manufacturer for a proprietary part
(especially for a very old set), the wait can be several weeks.
